Jaigarh Fort History


This fort is located a short distance from the Amber Fort. This fort has been built in the shape of Amber Fort. It is 3 kilometers (1.9 m) in length and 1 km (0.62 m) in width from north-south. This fort is also known as "Jaiwan". Like all forts, Jaigad Fort also has its own history. Jaigad Fort was 150 miles away from the capital in the Gala period. During the Mughal period, this fort was looked after by Dara Shikoh, at that time Aurangzeb attacked this fort due to which he won but after losing to Aurangzeb, this fort came under the rule of Jai Singh and he got it rebuilt.

This cannon placed on Jaigarh Fort is considered to be the largest cannon in Asia. Its size is gauged from the fact that with its shell, a pond was formed in a village 35 km from the city. Even today, this pond exists and is quenching the thirst of the people of the village. This cannon is placed at the dungar door of Jaigad Fort. The length of the end of the cannon is 31 feet 3 inches. When the Jaiban cannon was first mounted for test-firing, a pond was formed by falling into a town called Chaksu, about 35 km from Jaipur.

The weight of this cannon is 50 tons. This cannon has the facility to hold 8 meter long barrels. It is the most famous cannon among the cannons found worldwide. To fire this cannon that was to hit 35 km, 100 kg gun powder was needed to fire once. Due to its overweight, it was not taken out of the fort nor was it ever used in battle.

There are an armory and a museum with a hall for warriors, which contains old clothes, manuscripts, weapons, and artifacts of Rajputs. There is a watchtower in the middle of it, which gives a beautiful view of the surroundings. The Amer Fort located nearby is connected to Jaigarh Fort via a secret route. It was built to evacuate women and children in an emergency. Amer Fort also has a reservoir in its center to supply water.
